Djibouti International Airport has functioned until 1994 mainly as a transit center for passengers and freight. Since 1995 the commercial traffic at the airport with the neighbouring countries has intensified. The modern Djibouti International Airport is able to handle efficiently the world largest airplanes and offers competitive rates compared to other airports in the region by following the open sky policy. Djibouti International Airport has furthermore introduced an airport Free Zone thereby creating a central freight location to encourage international airlines to use the facility as a HUB station.
